Country music has lost one of its most treasured voices.
Dolly Parton, the legendary singer-songwriter, actress and philanthropist whose career spanned more than six decades, has died at the age of 80.
The news was announced Tuesday by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, in a video message shared on social media on behalf of the Parton and Owens families.
“My name is Bryan Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I’m representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton,” he said. Seaver, who served as Parton’s head of security for more than 20 years, explained that the singer had personally asked him years ago to deliver the message when the time came.
He described the moment as one of profound sadness, while celebrating a woman whose impact reached far beyond music.
No official cause of death was immediately released.
Born Jan. 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee, Parton rose from humble beginnings in the Smoky Mountains to become one of the most successful and beloved entertainers in history. Her unmistakable voice, songwriting talent and larger-than-life personality helped make her a global icon.
Parton’s catalog includes some of country music’s most enduring classics, including Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, Here You Come Again, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You. As both an artist and songwriter, she broke barriers for women in country music and inspired generations of performers across multiple genres.
